Define a small vertical slice
A vertical slice is one complete path through your product: a user arrives, does the single most important thing, and sees a result. Everything else — settings, billing, admin, edge cases — waits.
- Name the one job the first version must do.
- Write the shortest path a user takes to complete that job.
- List what is explicitly out of scope for version one.
- Decide what data, if any, must persist between sessions.
Prompt in milestones
Large single prompts tend to produce impressive but brittle output. Ask for one milestone at a time, review the result, then move on. Each milestone should leave the product in a working state.
- Milestone 1: layout and navigation shell.
- Milestone 2: the core interaction, with placeholder data.
- Milestone 3: real data, state and persistence.
- Milestone 4: responsive behaviour and empty/error states.
- Milestone 5: polish, metadata and launch checks.
Write acceptance criteria
Before prompting, write the sentences you will use to judge the result. They keep reviews objective and make regressions visible.
Given a signed-out visitor on / When they submit a valid email Then the form shows a confirmation state And the input keeps focus order intact And the layout holds at 320px width
Avoid scope creep
Scope creep in AI-assisted building usually arrives as "while you're at it". Keep a parking list, and only pull from it once the current slice passes its acceptance criteria.
Test the generated output
- Walk the core loop yourself on a phone and a laptop.
- Check keyboard navigation and visible focus states.
- Try invalid input, empty states and slow connections.
- Read the generated code for anything you would not have written.
- Confirm no keys or secrets are embedded in client code.
Export the code
An exported repository is what turns a session into an asset. It gives you history, review, backups and the ability to move hosts later.
Read the GitHub export guideKeep control of domain and deployment
Register the domain in an account you own, keep DNS access to yourself, and treat the builder preview URL as temporary. Follow the exact DNS values your host or platform provides.
